“There shall suddenly appear…”

The prophecy, then two centuries in conversation. The interpretation is labeled speculation; the quotes are real.

“The world is in travail, and its agitation waxeth day by day… And when the appointed hour is come, there shall suddenly appear that which shall cause the limbs of mankind to quake. Then, and only then, will the Divine Standard be unfurled, and the Nightingale of Paradise warble its melody.”

What appears suddenly, causes the limbs of mankind to quake, and — only then — turns humanity toward a Standard it had ignored? I read this, speculatively, as a fit for transformative artificial intelligence: a capability arriving with unprecedented suddenness, unsettling every institution at once, and forcing the species to ask, in unison and under deadline, what do we actually value?

Asked whether — as with the UN after 1945 — it takes a disaster before minds change.

Notice the last pairing especially. The engineers' newest requirement for a safe AI — relentless orientation toward truth — sits beside this faith's oldest rules: truthfulness as the foundation of every virtue, and the independent investigation of truth as the first obligation of every soul.

The world's most capable engineers are publicly asking for a shared moral framework, global institutions, truth-seeking minds, and a reason for the species to come together — and saying they don't know where those come from. The Bahá'í Writings prophesy that humanity, after its material order falters, goes searching for precisely this and finds it already written.
